Making Decisions For this blog, we are going to try something new with format. Instead of writing in one collective voice, as we have done for our past blogs, we are going to… well, you’ll see. Danny: “Now, I dont know” is how the musical we’re currently listening to, Ghost Quartet, starts, and its also how most of our conversations for the past two weeks have started. Allan: Wow, this is actually super apt. I literally just turned on Ghost Quartet because it’s the musical we are currently obsessing over, not even realizing that the first song is LITERALLY describing how we feel. Danny: These “I dont know” conversations have been about both of our indecisiveness about dropping 6.042, Math for Computer Science. Allan: So let’s start from the first time we began thinking about dropping the class as soon as we got our results from exam 2. This was the exam we both did w o r s t on so far in our entire time here. Besides being a punch in the face, because of the fact that we spent ~12 hours studying during our long weekend, it was very nerve racking because we really wanted to pass this class. Danny: At this point in the semester, we knew that we’d need to do well on the next two exams, final, and psets for us to pass the class. So I proposed the plan to stay in the class until we take the third exam. See how we do. And based on that, make a decision on whether we should stay in the class or not. Allan: I was initially very opposed to this plan, because I thought that regardless of how we do on exam 3, exam 4 and the final (which are after drop date) could go really badly. So for a week before exam 3, we constantly argued about this. Danny: My reasoning for wanting to take the third exam, despite knowing that it would be another 10+ hour pursuit, was just not wanting to make a rash decision. “I dont know”, what if I end up really liking the material for the third exam, and doing so well that I’d be confident enough with my standing in the class that I’d be pretty sure that I’d pass. And if I do just as badly as I did on the second exam, I’d know that I’d be in a position where I probably wouldn’t be able to pass and should just drop it. I think Allan’s fear was that we’d do somewhere between really well and really badly on the third exam, in which case, our fate of passing or failing would greatly be determined by our fourth exam score and final, and hence we’d need to make a decision as opposed to having our decision be guided by a test grade. Allan: And my fear is exactly what happened! We both did better on the third exam than on the second exam, but not nearly well enough to be confident that we’d definitely pass. Much frustration. “I don’t know;” this mindset where an exam grade will decide my fate is honestly kind of silly. Because I know that I would be a lot happier and be able to dedicate more time to the classes that I actually am enjoying if I drop this class. And because of the flexibility of my major, I can replace this class with any other course 6 class in a future semester! Danny: I agree, but it’s so hard for me to take the easy way out. Why is it so difficult for me to allow myself to be happy? Why do I feel like if I’m not in some capacity struggling, I’m doing this whole college thing wrong? I guess because challenging yourself is a pretty important thing to do. But I think theres a fine line between challenging yourself and being miserable. Because of the stress and consistent lack of sleep I’d been getting, I got a cold from the first to third week of October, and then another cold from the end of October to now; I still have a cough. I think I might have crossed that line this semester. Allan: I think that’s one of the bad things about the MIT environment. It seems like everyone is struggling to some degree, so you feel like if you arent, then youre doing something wrong? But regardless, I agree that we did cross the line this semester. I’ve honestly been a proponent of choosing our current happiness this semester over anything else, and dropping the class sooner. But besides all this stress about passing exams, there are a couple more aspects of our discussions, which is neither of us even really like the material of the class. Danny: This class covers material such as different types of proofs, predicate logic, infinite cardinality, and much more. A lot of people here really enjoy that kind of stuff. And I honestly thought I would too. Throughout my entire K-12 education, math was by far my favorite subject. I loved how concrete it was. There was always an answer. Doing a math problem felt like ice skating: smooth, crisp, and beautiful. But honestly, when I came to MIT, that changed. I generally liked my first math class here, 18.02 multivariable calculus, but it felt more like ice-skating on ice that had not been zambonied in a week. The concepts were much less concrete to me, took a lot longer for me to wrap my head around. But, eventually with enough office hours and studying, I felt like I got a grasp of it. 6.042 is the second math class I’m taking at MIT, and it’s a much different story. The ice rink melted, turned into mud, and my ice skates became tennis rackets. Every concept felt so vague and confusing. And regardless of how many TA’s explained it to me, and how many hours I would put into studying, I would never feel like I fully grasped a lot of the material. Allan: Yes^^^ to everything Danny just said. Also, I LOL’ed at “my ice skates became tennis rackets” because of how accurately that describes how this material makes me feel. Anyways, I also had a very similar transition in my feelings about math (shocker!). In high school, I really liked learning about cool math things, either by studying for math competitions, or by watching a lot of math youtubers, like Vi Hart or Numberphile, or by taking extra math classes. I almost felt pride in having math be my favorite subject. I formed one aspect of my identity around it, essentially thinking of myself as “a-nerd-who-likes-learning-math-and-watches-cool-math-videos-and-goes-to-competitions”. But after coming here, that part of my identity started to change. After working countless hours a week, week after week, on math psets and trying to do the questions with the same enthusiasm I had in highschool, I noticed I was just not enjoying myself nearly as much. Pretty early on last yea r, I just realized I dont love math anymore. I still really liked it, just not as much anymore to call it my “passion” or my “favorite subject” and definitely not enough to declare it as my major. Something that definitely changed was the difficulty level MIT math is way harder than any math I ever did. And I also felt the gap in my abilities compared to my peers’ significantly increase from highschool to here, and that shock sucked. So it may sound like I loved math in highschool because it was easy and I was good at it, but I no longer do since it no longer is and I no longer am. But that’s not the case. I still found math really difficult in high school. And I was never the best at it in my school either. My interest in the subject, while maybe partially, was definitely never fully dependent on how good I was at it, not in general and not in comparison to others. With that said, I knew this shift was happening, but couldnt figure out why. All I knew is people change all the time, and this is one of the ways that I’ve changed at MIT. So, for most of freshman year, I played around with being course 4 or 2 or 2A-4 because I knew I liked making things in highschool, and that interest didnt seem to shift upon coming to MIT. But after taking classes in both 2 and 4, I realized I didnt want to major in either, and declared the flexible joint major I’m still currently in. Danny: I feel like this whole semester has been a very revelatory one, and the thoughts that have resulted from this semester are a culmination of thoughts that have been brewing for a few years. It all started when we first explored something we had always wanted to do during highschool but never got the opportunity to animation. Over around a 2 week period, Allan and I made a 2-minute paper animation. Over our freshman fall, we joined animation club, but werent able to actually learn much, because of technical difficulties with downloading animation softwares and them being glitchy when we would be able to download them. But in spring semester, when we became involved in the Borderline Project, we learned that Photoshop has a very user friendly animation timeline. So we both made our first digital animations. And over the summer after freshman year, we made another animation, this time almost entirely digitally on Photoshop. And it was honestly sooooooo much fun. This time we spen t close to 2 months working on it, multiple hours every day. This semester, we decided to take Animation 1 in MassArt. The absolutely stark contrast between our animation class which we both LOVE and 6.042 which we really don’t like really made it clear what makes us happy and what doesnt. It’s really funny. The conversations we’ve had that start with “I dont know” about trying to decide whether to drop this class or not have ALWAYS lead to conversations about how we wish we would be able to do more animation and art and have that be a job. So we both do, in fact, now “know.” We’ve just took a while to figure it out. Allan: Danny just articulated the whole reason in my shift of interest in the beginning of freshman year with math and my indecisiveness about my major at the end of freshman year. And we are going to work our way up to computer graphics for the course 6 part of our major to figure out if we want to do a more technical job in animation. He shouted to the police officer if he was going to kill him. As he proceeded to get out the car he put his hands behind his head and walked towards the officer. The officer shouts at him, swearing at him, to get back. Villaplando does not listen and was shot twice in the chest. The grand jury does not charge the officer for shooting Villaplando. It was said that the officers actions obeyed with the law regarding the use of deadly force. (Shoichet 2015). Villalpando was wrong for not obeying the officers orders, but it did not mean that he had to get shot twice in the chest. The officer should have found different ways to deescalate the situation. Villalpando did not have a firearm. He had his hands behind his head. The officer could have used a taser instead of using his weapon. Case #2: Jessica Hernandez was a, 17 year old, unarmed Hispanic girl who was also killed by the police. Hernandez was known to be loving, fun, and goofy teenager. She was in a vehicle with four other teenagers. The car had been reported stolen. All the teens in the car were unarmed. Hernandez was the one driver. She was the only one killed the other three were uninjured. The police officers opened fired to the vehicle and thats how Hernandez was killed. The officers claimed self-defense and that the car was going towards them. One officer was injured, but it was still undetermined how he got injured. (Hebets McCallin). Hernandez was in a reported stolen car, but officers should not be opening fire at a moving car. They are supposed to try and move out of the way. It is a policy that is nationally known. Open fire is allowed only when the car poses a forthcoming danger of death. The parents and the department decided on a settlement. This was done to defuse the tension and the prompted protest. The settlement was for $1 million. Case #3: Pedro Villanueva a, 19 year olds, unarmed man was killed by police. Villanueva was a target to help the police crackdown some illegal street racers. The officers had been following Villanueva in an unmarked car for about 5 miles. Villanueva then hit a dead-end street in which he proceeded to make a U-turn to get out. As he was getting out of the street the police officers opened fired. Villanueva was shot multiple times and died at the scene. The other passenger was shot in the arm. Although in the state of California it is allowed to open fire at a moving car, it is considered very dangerous and ineffective. (Downs, 2016). Villanueva shooting was uncalled for. He did not know that he was being followed because the car was unmarked. Instead of shooting the officers could have identified themselves and maybe he would have stopped. The officers could have tried to deescalate the situation, but instead chose to open fire. No reports have been made in regards to what happened to the officer involved in this shooting. Case #4: Magdiel Sanchez was a, 35 year old, deaf man killed by police. The police officers were responding to a hit-and-run in the area. When they encountered Sanchez they saw that he had a metal pipe with him. He always carried that metal pipe to make the dogs stay away and to help him communicate. The officers demanded Sanchez to put the pipe down, but he did not obey. Some of Sanchez neighbors told the officers that he was deaf and that he could not hear them. They did not listen and one officer tased him and the other officer shot him. He was dead at the scene. The police officer who shot Sanchez was put on administrative leave. Why did the officers choose to ignore what his neighbors were telling him? Why did the officers shoot after they had already got him with the taser? Why did the officers not try anything else besides yelling? They clearly saw that he was not answering their commands. The officers could have done so much more rather then shooting him. Officers Training: Police officers often use force offensively rather than defensively. This happens when the suspect does not follow the orders told to them. There mentally trained to use of firearms and defensive tactics. When in reality they are ignoring crisis intervention and des-escalation strategies. Officers are trained to shoot rather than to wait until the situation is at a dangerous level for them. They are told to just make it home at the end of their shifts. Police officers should see a gun before using deadly force. Everyone is equal under the law. If everyone is equal under the law then why bear a criminal justice system that morals the life of a police officer more than the life of a suspect? (Gross, 2016). It was found that police officers do not receive consistent training concerning deadly force in the department. It was also said that data was not updated like it should have been. That they risk their lives every day to keep the public safe. That the officer shot the person in self-defense and that they also have a family that they have to go home too. That they were asking for it when they decided to commit a crime prior to the shooting. Some might also say that the person should have not ran away from the officer. Possible Solutions: Change is not going to happen overnight. It is going to take years and many solutions to stop police brutality. It is also going to take solutions to tackle every part of police brutality. A possible solution can be to have better training for officers on how to deal with different people. Meaning that the officers should take extra time on deadly force. Showing them pervious shooting and seeing what they can do different instead of killing the person. They can strategize how to deescalate the situation when the person is unarmed and somewhat compelling to their demands. They can strategize different ways to take down the person. Some ways can be to use the taser more. This will shock them and bring them down. Giving the officer time to hold them down on the floor and arrest them if needed. They can also try using pepper spray. This will impair their eight sight and help the officer get control of the situation. Another way can be to try and talk to the person deescalate the situatio n. Some videos show where they are trying to talk to a white person to try to get them to calm down and comply. Why cant they do that with a person of color? Another solution can be to start building bonds with the community that the officer is patrolling in. Building these bonds will create a better environment to work and the people of the community will trust the officer. This will also defuse the tension that there is between officers and people of color. Officers have to show that they can be trusted. That still have to do their job, but the community will not be afraid to die. Minorities have trust issues with the police. Showing the community that not all police officers are the same that there are some good ones. Finally, the officers involved in these shootings should be fired and taken to trial. Most officers involved in these shootings do not get charged. They get administrative leave or the departments settles. Departments should take these cases very seriously because it represents the whole department. If having a murderer or racists in the department then its assumed that the whole department is the same way. There should be a zero-tolerance policy for racism. Officers should not get special treatment because they have badges. If they commit a crime then they should be processed like everyone else. This is another reason the community has a bad image about police officers because they get treated with special treatment when they are wrong. Beyond that, none of us are in a position to ensure anything. This is a battle we’re going into, after all. War doesn’t come with guarantees for either side.† Max chewed on his thick lower lip, mulling things over in his mind. â€Å"Well, I want to be there to make sure both sides play fair.† He rested his sharp eyes on Scarlett, understanding somehow that it was her spearheading this crusade. â€Å"Consider me the referee.† Scarlett grinned. â€Å"Then I guess the only question left is, how soon can we leave?† They all looked to Max for the answer. â€Å"Tonight,† he said confidently, reaching for Diana’s hand. â€Å"We’ll go tonight. The sooner we get this over with, the better.† They had an hour till dusk, just the right amount of time to arrive at the caves in sunlight, and to depart shrouded beneath the cover of night. It took three boats to get them all there. Cassie, Adam, Diana, and Scarlett were at the front, under Max’s guidance. As he rowed them closer and closer to the caves, Cassie’s nerves started to get the best of her, and she suddenly wished they’d composed a backup plan. She hadn’t wanted to appear doubtful at the time, but now that they were sitting out in the water with only Max’s word to go on, Cassie wished the Circle had at least considered an escape strategy. What if Max was simply delivering them to the hunters’ lair like cargo? Cassie looked to Faye in the boat behind theirs. They locked eyes and Cassie immediately understood that Faye was ready for anything. She was perched on the edge of her boat’s bow, watching and calculating. Cassie gave her a nod. For once, Faye’s suspicious, cunning nature served as the most necessary comfort, and Cassie was thankful for it. If this turned out to be a trap, Faye was fully prepared to take Max out to save the Circle – and Cassie would join her. As their boats neared the caves, the hulking fissures grew larger but no less threatening. By the time they had drifted within walking distance of the main cave’s entrance, Cassie got the sense that she was about to step into the mouth of a stone dragon. â€Å"We’re here,† Max said somberly. â€Å"Get up slowly unless you feel like going for a swim.† He smiled then and Cassie recognized the warmth in his face for the first time. She returned his expression as affectionately as she could. In a way, Max’s predicament wasn’t so different from her own. Like Cassie, he was caught between two opposing sides, between dark and light, his father’s nature and his own free will. Candlelight was the first thing Cassie noticed upon entering the cave. It flickered in orange and yellow flashes against the wall, illuminating their way deeper into the bowels of the dark cavern. Cassie could hear the hunters’ soft mumbling before she could see them. There they were: Mr. Boylan, Jedediah Felton, and Louvera Felton, along with two others Cassie hadn’t seen before. They were gathered just where Max said they’d be and they were kneeling in a meditative state, performing some kind of ritual. They all had their eyes closed and their heads bowed toward an intricately composed altar. Their ancient relics lay on the ground beside them. Adam gripped Cassie’s hand tighter, and with her other hand Cassie squeezed Diana’s fingers in her own. She was suddenly acutely aware of her own breath and the slight sound her own footsteps made upon the gravelly cave floor. She got the distinct feeling that the spell they were about to perform filled her heart and lungs. It rushed through her veins. This is it, she thought, and she could hardly contain her urgent desire to begin spewing forth the words. They contained her every wish, hope, fear, and need. His life was such a struggle from the beginning he contracted rheumatic fever at a young age and had neurological problems. He was born of parents that were from Czechoslovakia and moved to Pittsburgh before his birth on August 6, 1928. His mother had a huge influence on his art and would buy him candy bars as a reward for painting. His father died when he was young and his older brother took care of him while his mother worked. Every day his brother would make him Campbell soup and a sandwich for lunch. That later became the focus of one of his painting series. Julia his mother started taking him to free Saturday art classes at a local museum. Andy would stay late and wonder the museum focusing every detail of the paintings. His father set aside the funds for Andy to go to college. In 1949 he graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology. He also showed signs of having Espaliers Syndrome or Autism throughout his life. In his teenaged years he had several nervous breakdowns and was almost suspended from college. He was very socially awkward and was very self conscious of his looks. He had nose Jobs and skin ending processes done to help with the red splotches on his face that was a result of the rheumatic fever from his childhood. Andy moved to New York and was determined to get a Job in commercial art to ultimately become famous. He started hanging out a a little cafe in Manhattan called Serendipity. At this time Marilyn Monroe was always with her friends there so she became the object of Andy obsession at that time. This is probably why she is seen in his later works. This time period in his life everyone referred to him as Raggedy Andy because he was always seen in the same clothes and carrying a brown paper gag with all his drawings in it. He was struggling with his homosexuality and his fear of imperfection in himself. There were several attempt at having a relationship, but they ended with him very depressed for days. After making the conscious decision to change his view on this and forget about it so he could focus on his art. He wanted so desperately to become an recognized artist in the art community. That came later that he intended , but with more fame than he could ever imagine. Antas work took on so much meaning and was a mirror of life under all the masks that everyone wore. He saw people from the inside and was noted at detecting retreats in people. The height of his art career was when he opened the Factory where he would have lavish parties and would begin dabbling in the film industry. Critics were very harsh on Antas first films such as Sleep an 8 hour long movie filming a man sleeping. When asked about why he would film that he replied why not the man was his friend and he left his door unlocked. He had a desire to show beauty and greatness in the most plain things. His studio gave people from all walks of life a place to come and be their self. He studied these people and enjoyed them begin there while he created his art work. The atmosphere he created in the Factory was what is refereed to as the start of the asss. He was very sensitive to many things so he would rarely indulge in any of the drug taking parting that was going on around him. Instead he would Just watch everyone and that was like his inspiration for his art. However he did have a slight addiction to amphetamines that he refereed to as giving him the power to do more work. He was able to be a art creating machine. He was quoted at saying you should Just keep creating art even when others think it is not good. That was his drive he adapted after all his failures he endured along the ay. After Andy survived an assignation attempt that left him in the hospital for several weeks his art began to change. He was more emerged in the serial reproduction of images in his art work. He was asked to do a portrait of a congress woman and he took her all over the town to photo strip booths with a baggie of coins he coached her through each picture session. The reason I chose Andy Warhol is my desire to be a graphic artist and he had such an insight in the start of pop art. He was such a genius of his time with how he over came so many things. I could connect with him in so many ways through his art ND his personal life. His struggle to stratum took so many turns before he made it. I totally understood his need to become a machine with making art. I have recently started using markers in all my paintings and I can get one done a day where when I was painting them all by hand it took weeks. I am now extremely interested in learning more about screen printing to help me speed up the process and to use my own photographs. Just to do some paintings in his paint style with the paint first then screen print over it would be a lot of fun. I love how quick he could produce art they aid he created sass of paintings in a month. Also I loved how all the Campbell soup paintings were 16 x 20 that is the size of all my paintings and is a commonly starter artist canvas size. Priestly shows this seriousness through the way Mr. Birling speaks; there are a lot of dashes in his speech, allowing Mr. Birling to stop and pause to think. Every now and again Mr. Birling looks at his son and son in law to see if they are paying attention. Mr. Birling puts forward his views on how he believes a man should look after himself. Arthur Birling is portrayed as a Heavy looking man, rather portentous in his middle fifties but rather provincial in his speech. He believes When things are so much easier a man has to make his own way; has to look after himself and his family too of course. Mr. Birling is very patronizing when talking to you youngsters. He intimidates Gerald and Eric Mr. Birling is one of those people who like to talk a lot. His conversation starts to tell us that hes rather proud of his achievements, and success, this is portrayed throughout the whole of the play. He boasts about having been the mayor and that he might be on his way to having a knighthood. I might find my way into the next Honours list. Mr. Birling seems a cold hearted businessman who only cares about money and as long as he and his family are okay there is nothing to worry about. Mr Birling also clearly states that he doesnt like the socialists who are around. He refers to them as cranks, people who do all the talking. The audience will probably be thinking if they agree with Mr. Birling at this moment or not. I personally think that if a younger audience was to watch this play they would agree with Mr. Birling because today society is more or less as Mr. Birling describes. However if we look at an audience who are older and grew up at that time, they will more or less disagree with what Mr. Birling says, as society in those times were hard and people cared about each other and left more of a community spirit. Violence was much less prolific and therefore people enjoyed other peoples company. Young children were allowed out without their parents worrying about them being kidnapped or raped or even murdered. As soon as Mr Birling has said a man has to look after himself and his own family there is a knock at the door, the timing is crucial. The Inspector is shown as a very mysterious and odd like figure throughout the whole play. The Inspector has many messages to share throughout his last speech. He gives the message that one Eva smith has gone- but there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths. Here the Inspector is telling the Birling family that although one Eva Smith has died, there are plenty more Eva Smiths and John Smiths in the world. In this speech Priestly is referring to John as Adam. The children of Adam and Eve are everybody on Earth, and in the play one of the children of Adam and Eve has committed suicide due to others being self centred. The Inspector starts off his speech with but remember this. He has a calmer way of delivering out his speech than Mr. Birling did; also earlier Inspector Goole is described on his entrance as having an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness. He is a man in his fifties, dressed in a plain darkish suit. He speaks carefully and weightily. The audience would know straight away that he will have different views to those of Arthur Birling. The Inspector and Mr. Birling are contrasting characters. We dont live alone. We are members of one body says the Inspector. Here Priestly is saying the exact opposite to what Mr. Birling considered as LIFE, demonstrating Priestleys own views of socialism. I think that the Inspector is more of a God like figure as he has Christian views and I tell you that the time will soon come when, if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish. This quote is warning that if we do not learn charity in this life now, we will pay for in our afterlife. The inspector could be Priestly who was a socialist and was a strong Christian, or the inspector could be speakers for God or the voice of God or maybe a ghost. We are not told but personally I think that its Priestly because he had very strong views on socialism. The fact that if we dont care about each other or have any responsibility for each other, then life is going to be hard and many more people will die due to the selfishness of some people who have more money but who are not prepared to share. Also that if you are greedy in your life you will be punished by God in your after life than enough and this is another message which is given in the play. Furthermore, I think that the theme of responsibility is clearly shown, as every character is made to feel the death of Eva Smith in some way. I think that it affects Sheila and Eric more who feel quite responsible. Just remember- it was you who killed Eva Smith. The inspector points his finger at everybody and wants them all to feel responsible for the death of Eva Smith. Responsibility is one of the main themes. I personally think this is emphasised thorough the Inspectors last speech. .. With their lives, their hopes and fears, their suffering and chance of happiness, all intertwined with our lives We are members of one body. We are responsible for EACH OTHER in this quote taken from the Inspectors speech on page 56 it shows that responsibility is the only way to make the world a happier place. I think that Priestly has chosen to set his play in the year 1912 before the Titanic had sunk to show how VERY foolish Mr. Birling is. When Priestly wrote this play it was after the end of the Second World War. 55 million people died and still the world carried on the way it had been before the wars. This is why I think Priestly has set the play in an earlier time to show the audience that even after the deaths of many innocent people; we still refuse to change or to take responsibility for each other. This play was first performed in a theatre in Moscow, as it couldnt be performed in London at that time because of the effects of the Blitz. I think that Priestly did this on purpose as then the audience could see in to the future and see a more positive society. In my opinion I think that the play has a message for everybody. That being responsible will not only make you a better person as a whole and give you a peaceful afterlife but will also help all the Eva and John Smiths in the world, because there are many millions and millions and millions of people like John and Eva as the Inspector stated on page 56/57 of the play An Inspector Calls. An Inspector calls is about community and responsibility, with many themes such as morality, capitalism, responsibility and socialism.
